Choosing a Right Place to Stay for your Dog. How to Find Good Boarding Kennel
When going on a trip even for just a few days you of course want to make sure that your pet is in good hands. Bringing your pet along is not always feasible so that you may have to leave your pet at home. Even though you might have friends or family who would be willing to take care of your pet this might not be the best option especially if they are not used to taking care of pets. Having someone drop by your house once or twice a day is not a very good idea because your pet might get into scrapes or can get ill and need immediate attention in your absence. Your pet would also most surely feel neglected since not only would he be missing you but would actually be missing human interaction for most of the day. Because of this many pet owners are finding boarding kennels a very good place to leave their pets when going on a trip, especially on long ones.
Boarding kennels have the advantage of having experienced handlers take care of your pets so that you won’t have to worry if your pet is getting the proper exercise, nutrition, and attention it needs. Boarding kennels also employ professionals who will immediately notice if your pet seems to be ill or simply stressed out and know what to do about it. However not all boarding kennels offer the same services and there may be some out there that just wouldn’t do for your pet’s needs. So when choosing a boarding kennel make sure that your standards are met and that you feel a 100% comfortable about leaving your pet there. To help you choose a good boarding kennel here are some things you might want to take note of:
1. Use kennel recommended by your vet or a friend who’s previously used their service.
2. If you can’t get a recommendation for any boarding kennel near you then you can choose one through the yellow pages but be sure to make a background check on each of the available choices.
3. When doing a background check find out whether the boarding kennel is licensed or has certified (only for places where the state requires inspections), there are any complaints against the institution by contacting the Better Business Bureau, there’s any negative customer feedback on their website if they have one, and if the kennel is a member of the American Boarding Kennels Association (719-667-1600). Being a member of ABKA is a sure sign that the kennel has high standards.
4. Visit the kennel before signing your pet up.
5. During your visit take note of the overall cleanliness of the facility. Insist on seeing the actual kennels and observe the staff at work. Check their attitude towards the pet. Check out the rest of the facility, the living arrangements (whether animals of different species are placed in different areas or in the same room), the beddings, the space allowed for each animal, and whether there is an exercise area for pets.
6. If the kennel seems to be satisfactory to you then find out about their requirements and policies. Read the fine print to make sure you won’t be surprised in case of any additional charges.
