Finding the Perfect Pet Sitter
When going on a trip even for just a few days you of course want to make sure that your pet is in good hands. Bringing your pet along is not always feasible so that you may have to leave your pet at home. Even though you might have friends or family who would be willing to take care of your pet this might not be the best option especially if they are not used to taking care of pets. Professional pet sitters might be the right option for you.
Using a pet sitter’s services has several advantages. Although boarding kennels are also feasible having a pet set sitter come over can be better for your pet since it won’t have to adjust to a new environment. Your pet wouldn’t also have to travel, however short that maybe, to get to a boarding kennel. In addition to this you still get quality care from someone experienced with animals and can be sure that your pet is absolutely in good hands. When looking for a pet sitter you need to make sure though that the pet sitter you choose is up to your standards. To help you choose the perfect pet sitters here are some things you might want to take note of:
1. Choose a pet sitter recommended by your vet or a friend who’s previously used their service.
2. If you can’t get a recommendation for any pet sitter you then you can choose one through the yellow pages although it is a better idea to find one by contacting the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters (800-296-PETS) or Pet Sitters International (336-983-9222).
3. Do a simple background check on the pet sitter. Find out what the experiences of their other clients by checking the pet sitter’s website if there’s any or by contacting other clients if possible.
4. Make sure the pet sitter carries insurance in case of any accidents and that all the staff are bonded as added precaution against the theft of your beloved pet.
5. Hold an exhaustive interview with the pet sitter you plan to choose and ask him/her about his/her training and/or work experience. In return be prepared to answer all of the sitter’s questions regarding your pet’s personality, habits, peculiarities, health, daily schedule, and whatever relevant stuff the sitter thinks of. If the sitter does not ask you anything regarding your pet or is very sketchy then volunteer information. But if you sense that the sitter is not very interested in knowing more about your pet it might be a good idea to look for a different sitter since this might signal that the sitter is not very caring or professional at the least.
6. Make sure the sitter has a backup professional sitter to take care of your pet in case the sitter gets sick or for whatever reason suddenly can’t take car of your pet.
7. Make sure your pet sitter has partner vet who can attend to your pet’s needs in case of any medical emergency or that the sitter at least knows how to contact your preferred vet.
8. Find out if the sitter will agree to any value added service like watering your plants in case you need it.
9. And last, make sure everything regarding your agreement is clear and that you sign a written contract.
